Am going to bed very early tonight. Why? Well, I'm glad you asked.

My speech teacher's been bugging me for a while now to sign up for the National Forensics League competitions. They're basically speech contests with categories like extemporaneous, radio broadcast, humorous interpretation, original oratory, improv duet, etc. I finally caved in this week after months of her nagging me, I agreed to go watch a contest and see if I wanna do it.

So, I handed in the permission form today and had this conversation with my teacher.

Lucy: So, can I watch Alec do his radio bit?
Mrs. C: As long as it's not scheduled during extemp, sure.
Lucy: I don't plan on watching extemp though.
Mrs. C: I know, but I signed you up for the extemp competition.
Lucy: But I'm just watching!
Mrs. C: Oh, please. I signed you up weeks ago.
Lucy: :freaks out:

So, yeah. Tomorrow, I'm doing extemp. It's divided into two rounds, one for foreign affairs (WHICH I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT AND WOULD HAVE RESEARCHED IF I WAS WARNED) and one for domestic issues. I'll be given three prompts, will pick from one, and then have a half hour to come up with a seven minute speech, then perform it with no notes.

:scream:

For that reason, I'm going to bed. Wish me luck! D:

Good luck! That totally sucks that your teacher did that.

I did the same kind of thing in HS... ours was called 'Speech', some catagories though. Extemp always seemed crazy to me. It seemed like actual work. So I did humorous interpretation... always fun to watch. Like watching people with multiple personality disorders, except, you know, funny.

I'm sure you'll do great. Just try and *sound* really convincing and well informed. Remember 78% of all satistics are made up on the spot.

As a former officer in my high school speech team I wish you the best, I know you can knock em dead!

I'd still be in speech teams in college but they've cut it down to one event, one where they don't grade you on how well you speak, just how fast you can throw legal jargon. Lame!
