Format: WMV, high-res, small vid, 320x240, 16 mb file, 4:19.

Summary: A humorous look at Professor Charles Edward Eppes- who he is, what he does, and the people around him. Co-starring Don, Alan, Larry, and a bunch of mathovision.

Vidder Notes: The most work I put into any fannish project before. Very upbeat, quick vid, with something about 400 cuts and transitions...? Colossal thanks goes to Chi, my wonderful beta who watched about five versions of this vid, praised it, then pointed out my screw ups. And, yes Chi, I got all the loose frames out except that one in the beginning that isn't but looks like a frame and the one in the second chorus. Sorry! I tried. Outside that flaw, I'm fairly convinced that the vid has no technical problems whatsoever. *win* And huge kudos to Jonathan Coulton's "Mandelbrot Set", the only song that made me like math and, quite frankly, rock out to it. It is made of awesome.

Also, someone told me after watching the vid that you really need the lyrics to get it. So, just to appease her, here are the song lyrics:

"Pathological monsters!" cried the terrified mathematician,
"Every one of them is a splinter in my eye
I hate the Peano Space and the Koch Curve
I fear the Cantor Ternary Set
And the Sierpinski Gasket makes me want to cry."
And a million miles away a butterfly flapped its wings
On a cold November day a man named Benoit Mandelbrot was born

His disdain for pure mathematics and his unique geometrical insights
Left him well equipped to face those demons down
He saw that infinite complexity could be described by simple rules
He used his giant brain to turn the game around
And he looked below the storm and saw a vision in his head:
A bulbous pointy form
He picked his pencil up and he wrote his secret down

Take a point called Z in the complex plane
Let Z1 be Z squared plus C
And Z2 is Z1 squared plus C
And Z3 is Z2 squared plus C and so on
If the series of Z's should always stay
Close to Z and never trend away
That point is in the Mandelbrot Set

Mandelbrot Set, you're a Rorschach Test on fire
You're a day-glo pterodactyl
You're a heart-shaped box of springs and wire
You're one badass fucking fractal
And you're just in time to save the day
Sweeping all our fears away
You can change the world in a tiny way

Mandelbrot's in heaven, at least he will be when he's dead
Right now he's still alive and teaching math at Yale
He gave us order out of chaos
he gave us hope where there was none
And his geometry succeeds where others fail
If you ever lose your way, a butterfly will flap its wings
From a million miles away, a little miracle will come to take you home

Just take a point called Z in the complex plane
Let Z1 be Z squared plus C
And Z2 is Z1 squared plus C
And Z3 is Z2 squared plus C and so on
If the series of Z's should always stay
Close to Z and never trend away
That point is in the Mandelbrot Set

Mandelbrot Set, you're a Rorschach Test on fire
You're a day-glo pterodactyl
You're a heart-shaped box of springs and wire
You're one badass fucking fractal
And you're just in time to save the day
Sweeping all our fears away
You can change the world in a tiny way
And you're just in time to save the day
Sweeping all our fears away
You can change the world in a tiny way
Go on change the world in a tiny way
Come on change the world in a tiny way

I DID IT! *dances* And to you, the person who told me this would be impossible to vid: HA HA!

Oh! This was just lovely and so very satisfyingly Charlie-saves-the-day-ish!

Excellent song. Fabulous pace. Beautiful job.

umm... can I steal that kermitflail icon? Purdy please?

Oh, thank you kindly! Wow, you review fast! *applauds*

Um, if you check my iconinfo and credit properly, sure.

I love it! That video is great!

Just out of curiosity, where did you find footage from 'Rampage'? It's the only episode I haven't seen yet and I've been searching for someway to download it or something so I don't have to wait until season 2 comes out on DVD.

[identity profile] silver11016.livejournal.com 2006-07-22 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I have never seen Numb3rs but I've got to say that this is impressive. One, fabulous song and two...wow. Luce, those transitions look so professional...You are going to be one hell of a filmie, girl. I wish you were a Trabuco kid because Sautner (our film guru) would kill to have you in his class if he saw this.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-07-22 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
*blushes* Oi, wow, Silvy. That's extremely kind, but plenty of folk do much better work than I.

... What class is there that covers digital film editing? And why don't I have it?

[identity profile] so8lue.livejournal.com 2006-07-22 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Wow! This song is so Charlie. It's just...guh.
Nicely done.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-07-22 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! *sweeping bow*

[identity profile] silver11016.livejournal.com 2006-07-22 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
After Drama 2, our school branches out into two areas of drama: stage production and film production. Beid is the stage director and Sautner teaches film.

We also have a TV production studio on campus but they're commercialists who don't believe in making art and are totally unrelated to drama.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-07-22 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, the jealousy I feel right now. All we have is little ol' Miss Pierce, who's a very set-in-her-ways theatre nut. And, um, isn't very open to film? She calls stage 'legitimate theatre' and film/telly 'illegimate theatre'. The former is a correct historical term, but I doubt the latter is. *sigh*

zomg, we have the telly news thing at out school and it's HORRIBLE! *laughs* They try to do a weekly news round, but it gets cut off the telly halfway through because they can't edit for shite and have all the screw-ups and jossed takes in it. And the audio doesn't work and... *laughs* Oh, man, give me a week with those students and I'd slap them into shape, I swear. Alas, I am "just a student", so... *shrugs*

[identity profile] neur0vanity.livejournal.com 2006-07-22 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, this may be the greatest thing I've ever seen. Your work on it is fabulous -- great editing, perfect choice of clips.

I don't know what's putting me into *squee* mode more: a math-centric Charlie video or the fact that somebody wrote a math song using the line "badass fucking fractal." What I do know is that I'm in love.

/shakes head/

You get a billion and a half cool points for this.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-07-22 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, the vid script for this is labelled "the MathGodCharlie thing" on my harddrive.

*takes cool points and locks them safely in her cool point vault* Whoo hoo!

Coulton is an amazing guy. Offers most of his music for free and is part of that cool new creative rights group that all about sharing art and work. Really cool cat. Download some of his stuff, it's great.

Thank you so much for the comment. Made me smile.

This is the first vid I've downloaded in a long time, and it was so good that I went back through my flist to find your entry in [livejournal.com profile] airhockeyislove again. And yes, after I'd found it I remembered it would have been easier to go directly to the comm, but it's after 9 pm and still almost 30°C, so... um, temporary insanity!

Anyway, this vid was just perfect. The song fit incredibly well, the short clips were well-chosen and expertly cut together. A beauty to watch. Not to mention the fact that I kept on laughing.

All in all, I liked it a lot, and considering the fact that my stance on maths, even after years of being out of school, is that it is evil and should die a slow and painful death, contrary to the vid's 'behold the glory that is maths' theme, that's saying something.

God, every time I wake up in the morning, I have to backtrack about 200 entries to get caught up. I hate it, but I love all the cool things I find.

*bounces* Thank you so much. Glad you found it funny. I was giggling while making it (when I wasn't screaming at WMM, of course).

Oh, hun, I hate maths. None of it clicks with me like language and physics do. But, man, a lyric like "baddass fucking fractal"? Who wouldn't rock out to that? *grin*

Thank you muchly for the review!

[identity profile] telligirl.livejournal.com 2006-07-23 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! I really liked it! It was so Charlie and energetic and wonderful. Perfect song, too.

[identity profile] 4amcoffee.livejournal.com 2006-07-23 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
ZOMG, can I have that song? Please?

That was such a cool vid. I've only watched bits and pieces of Numb3rs, but now I'm going to watch the rest of the first season...

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-07-23 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll upload it for ya. Hold on a tic...

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-07-23 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
*twirls happily* Thank you so much!

My side hurts from laughing at your icon. Whoever made it deserves a 'Dork of the Year' award.

*tackle hug*

Oh, you rock, just like this song.

*puts it on iTunes repeat*

And now something eaqually geeky for you... (http://www.sendspace.com/file/llk65s)

You've probably heard it before, but it's a song everyone should have.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-07-23 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, THAT IS SO MADE OF AWESOME!

And I've never heard of it, no. But I LOVE IT!

[identity profile] 4amcoffee.livejournal.com 2006-07-23 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah! I thought you might like it. They Might Be Giants have some weird-ass songs, man.

Anything else cool in your bag of music? *pokes*

Hee...lemme look...

Taa daa! (http://www.sendspace.com/file/ywmv0e)

I just snagged the first 20 songs, and one was a Ben Folds song that you already had, so here's 19 random songs pulled from my playlist.
