Title: Mandelbrot Set (or the MathGod!Charlie vid)
Vidder: Lucia Zephyr (
lucia_tanaka)
Song: the fabulous "Mandelbrot Set" by Jonathan Coulton.
Fandom: Numb3rs
Warnings: Vid uses 30 episodes, so spoilers for both seasons. Song drops the f-bomb twice (see lyrics, it's funny).
Format: WMV, high-res, small vid, 320x240, 16 mb file, 4:19.
Summary: A humorous look at Professor Charles Edward Eppes- who he is, what he does, and the people around him. Co-starring Don, Alan, Larry, and a bunch of mathovision.

Vidder Notes: The most work I put into any fannish project before. Very upbeat, quick vid, with something about 400 cuts and transitions...? Colossal thanks goes to Chi, my wonderful beta who watched about five versions of this vid, praised it, then pointed out my screw ups. And, yes Chi, I got all the loose frames out except that one in the beginning that isn't but looks like a frame and the one in the second chorus. Sorry! I tried. Outside that flaw, I'm fairly convinced that the vid has no technical problems whatsoever. *win* And huge kudos to Jonathan Coulton's "Mandelbrot Set", the only song that made me like math and, quite frankly, rock out to it. It is made of awesome.
Also, someone told me after watching the vid that you really need the lyrics to get it. So, just to appease her, here are the song lyrics:
"Pathological monsters!" cried the terrified mathematician,
"Every one of them is a splinter in my eye
I hate the Peano Space and the Koch Curve
I fear the Cantor Ternary Set
And the Sierpinski Gasket makes me want to cry."
And a million miles away a butterfly flapped its wings
On a cold November day a man named Benoit Mandelbrot was born
His disdain for pure mathematics and his unique geometrical insights
Left him well equipped to face those demons down
He saw that infinite complexity could be described by simple rules
He used his giant brain to turn the game around
And he looked below the storm and saw a vision in his head:
A bulbous pointy form
He picked his pencil up and he wrote his secret down
Take a point called Z in the complex plane
Let Z1 be Z squared plus C
And Z2 is Z1 squared plus C
And Z3 is Z2 squared plus C and so on
If the series of Z's should always stay
Close to Z and never trend away
That point is in the Mandelbrot Set
Mandelbrot Set, you're a Rorschach Test on fire
You're a day-glo pterodactyl
You're a heart-shaped box of springs and wire
You're one badass fucking fractal
And you're just in time to save the day
Sweeping all our fears away
You can change the world in a tiny way
Mandelbrot's in heaven, at least he will be when he's dead
Right now he's still alive and teaching math at Yale
He gave us order out of chaos
he gave us hope where there was none
And his geometry succeeds where others fail
If you ever lose your way, a butterfly will flap its wings
From a million miles away, a little miracle will come to take you home
Just take a point called Z in the complex plane
Let Z1 be Z squared plus C
And Z2 is Z1 squared plus C
And Z3 is Z2 squared plus C and so on
If the series of Z's should always stay
Close to Z and never trend away
That point is in the Mandelbrot Set
Mandelbrot Set, you're a Rorschach Test on fire
You're a day-glo pterodactyl
You're a heart-shaped box of springs and wire
You're one badass fucking fractal
And you're just in time to save the day
Sweeping all our fears away
You can change the world in a tiny way
And you're just in time to save the day
Sweeping all our fears away
You can change the world in a tiny way
Go on change the world in a tiny way
Come on change the world in a tiny way
I DID IT! *dances* And to you, the person who told me this would be impossible to vid: HA HA!

Date: 2006-07-22 06:37 pm (UTC)I don't know what's putting me into *squee* mode more: a math-centric Charlie video or the fact that somebody wrote a math song using the line "badass fucking fractal." What I do know is that I'm in love.
/shakes head/
You get a billion and a half cool points for this.

Coulton is an amazing guy. Offers most of his music for free and is part of that cool new creative rights group that all about sharing art and work. Really cool cat. Download some of his stuff, it's great.
Thank you so much for the comment. Made me smile.

Date: 2006-07-22 07:40 pm (UTC)Anyway, this vid was just perfect. The song fit incredibly well, the short clips were well-chosen and expertly cut together. A beauty to watch. Not to mention the fact that I kept on laughing.
All in all, I liked it a lot, and considering the fact that my stance on maths, even after years of being out of school, is that it is evil and should die a slow and painful death, contrary to the vid's 'behold the glory that is maths' theme, that's saying something.

Oh, hun, I hate maths. None of it clicks with me like language and physics do. But, man, a lyric like "baddass fucking fractal"? Who wouldn't rock out to that? *grin*
Thank you muchly for the review!

Date: 2006-07-28 10:40 pm (UTC)I'm extremely flattered that I inspired you. Go for it!
A few words of advice: do a practice vid first to get the hang of the editing process before moving onto a serious project. Write/type out the lyrics to the song, mark the instrumental sections, and write in what scenes you plan to put where. Never break the six second rule. Never re-use clips or use similar clips that make it look like re-use. Avoid slow songs, they're bad for pacing.
That's all I can think of... OH! And find a vidbeta.
*is compulsively helpful* If you have any questions, I can offer myself as someone to pester them with.
