why'd you fill my sorrows with the words you borrowed from the only place you know

I officially hate DeviantArt's new "put deviation in storage" option. I may just start saving people's art so it doesn't RANDOMLY DISAPPEAR FOR NO REASON WHAT.

In less selfish news, I think I'm gonna do one of those memefics where you pick an album and write a ficlet for each song. I think I wanna do Damien Rice's O. I'm in that kind of mood. And I'm slowly looking over this old fic Fly and I started writing, trying to get back in that plot-before-character wanking mindset. As if I ever focused more on a cohesive story over prose-heavy shit (see: Repeat to Fade, Facets, and everything else I've written). I'd mention how I'm reminded that Fly is a better writer than me, but I don't think obvious facts need to be restated.

Oh, damn, I don't have that Rice album on this computer. And my Zune is still charging... I guess I'll start tomorrow if I don't manage to make myself play Persona 4. Or maybe I'll just throw my massive music collection on shuffle and write for whatever comes up.

Sigh. I'm not better, I'm just different. There's so many little points of genius in RtF which I would never have thought of; from where you're standing, everyone else is better because you can't surprise yourself the way other people can.

Writing plot doesn't make anyone better or worse. It just means you put more effort into something no-one reads - character focused stuff is great, and I still do shitloads of that. Hell, I've only been trying to write plots for the last year or so, and I've been fanwriting since I was twelve.

And I thought RtF was plenty plotty, so there. ♥

aaaah I wasn't fishing for compliments, I just really noticed how much you set up beforehand in chapter two, then left so many notes on everything else that needs to be mentioned. I really thought it was like CSI: Philanthropy or something (which is why I haven't jumped back into the fic yet, I'm trying to wrap my head around how I'll incorporate all those notes).

IDK, I've always been told by my family and teachers that my biggest failing is that I don't have the patience to stop and explain and foreshadow, so maybe to me, you are a better writer because you can pull off what I haven't been able to for years.

You're a ton better at pacing and detail than I am. I am the WORST PACER EVER, I pad to get timing. You just seem to have a natural knack for it that I lack because I'm so impatient and desperate to get to the cool shiny stuff.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never thought of you as impatient. You spend a lot of time building exposition and setting things up.

THIS IS POINTLESS. I don't think anyone in fandom considers themselves a good writer anyway. 8(

UGH, it's such a useless option. If you don't want something there, why not just delete it? I'd understand if they let you do friend filters or something, but WTF, dA. >.>

I think I've only read one fic of Fly's (the secret Santa one), but I think y'all are both great writers~ I also don't think that a plot-heavy piece is inherently better than a character-driven one. I mean, a good story has both, y'know?

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently it's not useless because a lot of my favorites are being put into storage. D8

ffff WHAT? Go read her fics Untitled and Heartbeat and omg Tarot is genius too. All of those are in her FF.Net account, IIRC. I look to her (and maybe two other fen) when I need to think about MGS in an intelligent way.

I feel like I need to shove a bunch of recs down your throat now.

[identity profile] moonlitsiren.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I wasn't sure if you all were on ff.net or not. I'll be sure to check it out, asap.

And please do~ I'd like to read some nice MGS fic, but I don't know where to start. :[

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, you asked for it.

The best fic I've ever read in my life is Stray, but it's longer than most novels, so it takes a while to read. But it is completely genius.

Athena Crikey's stuff is great too. I'm particularly fond of Hold On and Sleep Cycle. All her fic is worth looking at though and her Through a Glass, Darkly informed a lot of my thoughts on VR.

As stated, Fly is a favorite of mine. Untitled should be read from MGS_Slash since the last chapter has a great easter egg in the coding there. All her stuff is awesome though.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head...

ooo that ain't a new feature! it had that when I joined!
a lot of people use it because you can't mass-delete, but you can mass-storage

I had no clue it was there until Lucy brought it up. Then again, I use my account for watching more than uploading, so there you go. :B

I've been using dA for a long damn time and this is the first time I've seen it...
