First bit of R3NT

The Fusion that Needs to Leave Me Alone-

R3NT

Starring!

Avenue A Apartments:
On the third floor:
Roommates Megan Reeves and Lawrence Fleinhardt. Megan is an actor looking for her big break. Lawrence is a brilliant philosopher writing a book.

On the second floor:
Roommates and brothers Donald and Charles Eppes. Donald is a struggling musician trying to write his one great song. Charlie is a fun-loving performer with hidden depths.

Elsewhere:
Amita Ramanujan, a lawyer who's drawn into the Bohemian lifestyle after dating Charlie. Now, after their break-up, is still involved in the residents of Alphabet City.
David Sinclaire, an aspiring filmmaker who used to live with Megan and Lawrence before selling one of his mini-doctumentaries to an anthology and buying an apartment not far from 11th Street. Still crashes at Megan and Larry's on the weekends.

---

Megan sipped her coffee as the answering machine clicked off. "You'd think they'd stop calling after a while."

Larry shrugged, not looking up from his notebook. "Your family is unusually persistant, but I think phone calls are customary on Christmas anyway."

"Don't hear it ringing with messages from your people. The Fleinhardts anti-social or something?" Megan walked over to the couch and sat on the back, socked feet on the cushion. She flicked Larry's ear playfully.

"Only to relatives who lose their scholarships for being too iconoclastic." Larry replied, swatting her hand away.

"Iconoclastic? You?" Megan laughed. "Compared to the residents of Alphabet City, you're horribly normal."

"No dispute there." Larry tapped his pen against his work. "Especially Avenue A."

"Let me guess, you met the new second floor inmates?" Megan smiled, amused, and played with her roommate's hair idly. "I thought I heard the Cat in here last night."

Larry paused. "The what?"

"The Cat." Megan said in a voice that made it clear this was average information Larry should know. "The infamous Feline of Avenue B-now-A. Curly top, wicked smile, flirts with everyone in a five block radius?"

"I believe he introduced himself as Charles, actually." Larry chided softly.

"Ta-ma-to, ta-mah-to." Megan stood and downed the rest of her coffee. "You don't live in this area long without running across him."

"Shame I didn't last longer." Larry muttered irritably.

"Oh, don't be like that. The brothers are nice enough, and the older one, Don- he keeps Charlie mostly under control."

"Yes, side with the fellow performer, not the friend you've known ages longer."

"Kindered souls." Megan looked over her shoulder from the sink at Larry. "He's good, though, isn't he?"

"Didn't notice."

"Really?" Megan's voice caught a gleeful tone and started to wax poetical, "Not his lovely curly locks, not the way he danced on the rooftop, not the passion in his voice, not the spark in his hazel eyes-"

"Brown."

"Ah ha!" She pointed an accusing finger. "You did notice!"

Larry groaned and poured into his writing, ignoring her.

---Meanwhile, downstairs...---

"Get off the counter." Don said as he walked in, eyes on the newspaper.

"I think you should at least look at me before ordering me around. Or maybe a hello. I hear normal people actually say 'good morning' to each other." Charlie replied easily from his handstand.

"Fine. Merry Christmas."

"Oh, if Dad could see his well-raised, good little Jewish son wishing people that." Charlie tumbled gracefully onto his back and to his feet on the floor.

"Yeah, he'd turn eight shades of furious." Don said dryly.

"And break out the Talmud. What's got you in such a dark mood?" Charlie stretched widely, popping his back loudly. "Ow."

"Do you remember anything about last night?" Don glared at his brother.

Charlie grinned darkly. "Oh, plenty."

"Eviction notices?"

Charlie's smile faded. "Benny's a jerk, but he won't do that. He was Bohemian once too."

Don rolled his eyes. "And then he left for a better life- a life that requires him to make different choices."

"You think he'll do it?"

Don shrugged, honestly not sure. "Haven't heard anything new on it. What was the street saying about it last night?"

Charlie looked out the window. "I didn't go out last night."

"Please, you weren't back until one."

"I can keep myself occupied in this building, you know." Charlie linked his hands behind his head. "There are people here too, if you stopped to see."

Don tossed the newspaper down. "Tell me you didn't go harassing our neighbors."

"I didn't go harassing our neighbors." Charlie chimed dutifully.

"Where did you go?"

"Upstairs. Power was out. Needed help getting my candle lit."

Don rubbed his face, knowing Charlie had been living in Alphabet City long enough to be cautious, but unable to stop the fraternal instinct to protect his younger brother. "Who?"

"The writer upstairs. He's interesting." Charlie's smile widened, very cat-like.

"Oh, the older guy?"

"He's not old, he's only got a few years on us."

"Yeah, a decade." Don blinked. "Charlie, tell me you didn't make a move on him."

"He did it first." Charlie pouted.

"When?" Don asked, clearly disbelieving.

"Last night, during the fire thing."

"He barely looked at you!"

"See, this is why you never get a date. You can't read people." Charlie nodded, certain. "He was interested."

"You can't just- just hit on anyone who looks at you!"

"Worked so far." Charlie shrugged, the tilted his head back. "I wonder if they have visitors." He got up and cracked open the fire escape's window.

Don nearly tripped over his feet to grab his brother's scarf. "Don't you dare!"

Wow! I'm prolly one of the 4 people on the planet who knows nothing about Rent, but this crossover (and Charlie art) is fantastic! I love Larry as a philosopher (as he is in canon) and Charlie as a fun-loving performer with hidden depths (hmmmmmm). He'll get Larry one way or another, in whatever universe!

So go rent the film! You will soooo not be disappointed! Catchy music too.

Rent!Charlie is very confident and, yeah, he'd wear Larry down eventually.

Maybe I'll jot down a few more scenes.
