So... I have decided Blackpool was more than just "OMGTENNANTHAVINGSEX!"

Though the sex was nice.

-First, if the annoyance that such an awesome idea wasn't done before. Crime-drama! With MUSIC! And you can sing along! Seriously, astounding idea that I'm so envious of. Music makes things better and increases the love of the media in question. Honestly, plot-wise, it's an average story. Granted, it's a good one, but nothing great. But add in music, and you've got a pure win. Also, about ten of the songs I was already very familiar with. Hearing them with the added punch of a character singing- especially these characters, who were so endearing- makes them that much better.

-I must say, I loved all the songs chosen, except for "Invisible", which is a lame song. But otherwise, I'd casually listen to any of these.

-Characters:

~Ripley Holden really grew on me. Sure, he's an asshole, cheats on his lovely wife, and harrasses his kids, but he grows in the course of the story. But, damn, the first time I watch, I wanted to punch his face in. Unfortunately, he's quite awesome at times and I usually laughed at his jokes (and hated myself for it after). David Morrissey was SO great with the character's OTTness. Ripley definately got the needed 'bigger than life' quality. Just go watch "Don't Stop Me Now" and "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me". Quite good.

~Peter Carlisle. Okay, I came for Tennant and stayed for Tennant and music. Peter is quite the screwed up man, moral-wise, but you can't have an interesting cop without that really. He falls in love, and that heavily compromises him, as is obvious from the moment he started gunning to arrest Ripley, which lead to the very bad choice to take Ripley's deal of having Natalie in exchange for fucking up the case. But, it works out in the end, which I like. Musicals = happy ending. On an actorlove note, David Tennant has an awesome voice. To just listen... it's got his accent in it and that makes me happy. I loved "Boots Are Made for Walking" and any time he has to hit a really good note ("Cupid" and "Ooh La La"). Plus, the man is dead sexy.

~Natalie Holden: Oh, I felt for her so much. Gal needed a hug. The world was really coming down around her- lying husband, rebellious daughter, awkward son, and nothing to really do (why does being a kept woman appeal to some people- it'd be horrible). Then Peter appears from the ether and BAM! Things get worse. She tried so hard to decide what she should do: what's good for her, or what's good for everyone. I kinda adored Nat. Voice-wise, Parrish did well, but not as well as Ripley, Peter, or...

~Danny Holden. LOVELOVELOVE! Yeah, sorry Tennant, Danny Holden wins the award for best character in my eyes. From right off, you can tell he got a ton of self-esteem issues and I was rooting for him through the whole thing. He's a complete outsider, tries so hard, and is still messing things up. But in the last two episodes, he starts to really act more comfortable and he takes over the casino! My biggest smile in the whole was the above shot. Danny rocks my world in every single scene he's in. He really does. And he's got the best voice of the lot. Seriously, listen to him in "Viva Las Vegas", where he's all deep and melodious, and in "Boy With the Thorn in His Side". And "Walk Tall". And "The Gambler". And everything. Danny wins so much.

~Shyanne Holden. As much as I want to believe she and Steve are twu luv... Eh. I hope they last, but I give 'em four years. Anyway, my opinion of her changes each time I watch. I love her standing up to her dad, pissing him off, then making up. On the other hand... she's a wee bit bipolar. Then again, her voice irritates me quite a bit, so I'm a shallow, horrible person who judges people by their voices. Yeah.

Favorite Shots:

'Cause I kinda love Danny. All the good ones are gay.

Dancing is Fucking Serious Business, apparently. I crack up at Ripley's little stern face every time, and omg, Peter's rather cute here, but he's looking at me. *shivers*

Keeping a straight face during "I Second the Emotion" is impossible. I have tried. If you don't crack a smile, you're a zombie. Hot pink silk sheets, pillowfighting, and estatic happiness. I'm quite certain that the gigglefits were just the actors not being able to not laugh.

*grin*

"I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" was quite hilarious and Ripley once again rocks.

"Ooh La La" was a perfect sequence. The shots in that number were gorgeous. And, look, Peter hitting a long note. He's lovely.

Ripley and Peter randomly dunking each other in the pool: not fun for actors, great fun for me.

You have not seen over the top until you've seen "Don't Stop Me Now".

Best Ripley Shot, that second one. He's just a leeetle insane.

'White Wedding' was one of my favorites. Really creepy.

ETA: Requested cap...

And so ends my thoughts on Blackpool. Help yourself to caps, just tell me which ones you're thinking of snagging.

*LUFF!*

Sigh.

But how could you not have a cap from the Gambler? Tennant!Tongue!

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
*runs to make one* Pure laziness?

[identity profile] svilleficrecs.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
TONGUE! Sigh.

[identity profile] bienegold.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
There is no foodpr0n in this entire review! The oral fetishes, woman!

"Don't stop me now" was absolutely amazing.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
There is now! *points*

God, I should do a count of all the food Carlisle eats...

[identity profile] katie__pillar.livejournal.com 2006-05-17 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I started capping this once and about half way through realised it had turned into Tennant food!pr0n caps. But there's just so much of it!

I love Blackpool. Fabbity review. :o)

[identity profile] svilleficrecs.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
*blushing* That cap always makes me blush! OMG so hot. Thank you.

[identity profile] pheonix-iz-me.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Where to begin..

Ok agree with pretty much everything.

I thought Ripley was fab, not a Black and White Caricature, like he so easily could have been but a whole rainbow, a Complete charector.
Loved the fact he bonded with Holworth

Never thought Of white wedding as creepy, but Yeah, if only cause Steve is vaugely sexy, and I dont want to see Steve as sexy.

Danny Rocks socks, There's supposed to be a sequal, Sans Tennat and Parrish, But the Thing I'm intrigued by is Danny's reaction to Peter and his mum, He's spent as much time with Pete as Nat and Ripley so his POV would be interesting.

My fave Song/Sequnce is 'Should I stay', I had an Idea for a DW fanvid, 10/Rose with 9 Apearing in the Place Ripley does.

My Othe Fave Song-Sequence:
Squeeze me Please me.
:D

Oh and 'The Gambler' at the end with Carlisle and Blythe harmonising, Too cute!

Um, thats all for now.

good review, nice caps.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The cinematography of 'White Wedding' is what makes is awesome. The PoV way of filimg and the lighting. Also- the voice synthesizing. *thumbs up* V. good.

... I heard they'd be appearing in the sequel, though briefly. *has a little glee over Yay! More Danny!*

'Should I Stay' or 'Should I Stay or Should I Go'?

Blythe was a bit awesome. Moment in 'Don't Leave Me' when Peter tries to turn around but Blythe stops him? *love*

[identity profile] pheonix-iz-me.livejournal.com 2006-05-17 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
'Should I Stay' The romantic Gabrielle one, RWith the Tux and the Dance and GUH!

'should I stay Should I go' is fun tho

[identity profile] bellanut.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
This is so great! I just watched it recently and loved how it all turned out. How morally ambiguous the whole the was, but the way everyone pretty much got what they wanted in one way or another.

I laughed REALLY hard when I hit your cap of Peters hand on the headboard. Very nice moment indeed.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
*winks* It's a good cap. The Hand of Doom, I've heard it called.

[identity profile] brandyleedotnet.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Man....David Tennant grabbing the headboard..... I don't even have words for that. *dies*

[identity profile] brandyleedotnet.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and don't forget cotton-candy-finger-licking porn!!

so much food pr0n. And fingers, and pencils. It's actually rather creepy. But then after Peter's all into the case again (and/or w/Natalie), Blythe does it! Madness. But clever.

[identity profile] chicklet73.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
*DEAD*

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm contempalting going through the entire series and capping/counting all the food shots.

[identity profile] brandyleedotnet.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee hee. I actually capped stuff from Doctor Who, Blackpool, and Secret Smile starting here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/brandylee/80091246/in/set-1676703/). He's finger-lickin' good!

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
omg, there are beautiful! What program do you use to cap?

[identity profile] brandyleedotnet.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I just *printscreen* it in Windows Media Player! It can be tedious if you're doing an entire episode, but for one-offs, works great.

[identity profile] chicklet73.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my GOD.

The headboard. You included the HEADBOARD.

And the ice cream. The licking. Just...*dies*

Awesome. I love some Blackpool. Thanks for the pictoral review!

HOORAY TENNANT!!!

(p.s. Yes, Danny was brilliant as well.)

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I did, albeit a crappy pic. Sorry. My Episode 03 is a bit poorer than the others. Can't find a better one though.

[identity profile] brandyleedotnet.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. The headboard. The headboard is just.....guh.

[identity profile] leaper182.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
*blink*

OH! It's not a DOCTOR WHO episode.

::hides::

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you've better be joking.

Blackpool was a six-part musical crime drama. Go find it. It is brilliant.

[identity profile] leaper182.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
... *cough*

I thought you were talking about an episode...

._.;;;

Then again, y'know, David Tennant having sex, having scruff... Not the Doctor. Not if they're really making him sexy and such.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
David Tennant singing, dancing, eating constantly, being an awesome detective, talking in his Scottish accent, being extremely charming, being a big ol' romantic...

Have I convinced you yet? Also, I'm a lazy fangirl. If I wasn't utterly certain everyone should see this, I wouldn't have spent two hours making a pictoral review.

[identity profile] brandyleedotnet.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmmm, you've convinced me to rewatch it tonight. w00t!

[identity profile] leaper182.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhh. Otay.

*makes note to download it from somewhere and watch*

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I think someone put it up at uk_telly. Or at tennant_love. But I'm pretty sure uk_telly.

[identity profile] harmonyfb.livejournal.com 2006-05-17 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
-First, if the annoyance that such an awesome idea wasn't done before. Crime-drama! With MUSIC!

Um...it was. See also: Cop Rock (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098772/).

Peter is quite the screwed up man, moral-wise

It's what I loved most about the series - there is no 'hero'. All of them are incredibly morally ambiguous. Well, and the Tennant!Sex! wasn't bad, either. ::sighs happily::

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-05-17 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
*reads like* Oh god, that's so awesome. *squeals*

Lots of protagonists; no heroes.
