ITP: Lucy is a fukken teal deer about music.

So Mum doesn't like Dark Side of the Moon.

... What?

This is the woman who I got my taste in music from, who painstakingly drilled some decent taste into me ever since I was a kid. I may have strayed a bit, but she's the architect behind my ears even though she doesn't listen to lyrics and I focus on them almost entirely.

How can anyone in good taste dislike DSotM? I mean, she doesn't even acknowledge how timeless and deep the album is. Me, I love Pink Floyd, but I cannot listen to The Wall, mostly because it scares the shit out of me. But I know it's one of the greatest concept albums of all time. SHE DOESN'T APPRECIATE OR LIKE DSOTM, GUYS.

I mean, has she just... not heard "Eclipse"? Or maybe she did and didn't get it? Because DSotM is about insanity. Each track represents a different thing that can drive you crazy (time, money, life, fame, fear of death, etc). The sun is an overreaching symbol of sanity (see, in "Time", about the fear of aging, "you run to catch up to the sun but it's sinking"- people battle with senility and similar ailments with age). The moon is madness (especially in "Brain Damage"- the word 'lunatic' is very deliberately chosen).

So "Eclipse" is about how insanity is inevitable, no matter how hard you fight it. It's bombastic and joyous and beautiful, and you're in the clear and open, 'cause everything under the sun is in tune, but in the end it won't matter. The rug is pulled out from under you, because the sun is eclipsed by the moon.

It's brilliant. How do you not love that?!

That said.

Now, I'm conflicted on the final message of Dark Side of the Moon. At the very end, there's the immortal line. I want to ask ya'll about it.

PS: You know the funny part? Dark Side isn't even my favorite. I greatly prefer Wish You Were Here.

I always wondered if that line - "you run to catch up to the sun but it's sinking" - was a reference to the end of To His Coy Mistress. Not sure if it is or it isn't.

I love that album. I haven't voted in your poll because I need to listen to it again and think about it. Doesn't help that my favourite track on it doesn't have lyrics as such (The Great Gig In The Sky - I can loop that forever). Much love to Wish You Were Here too...yeah, I love songs that are ridiculously long and convoluted for no real reason, bite me. >>>

You're not the only person I know who gets spooked by The Wall...can you explain why? I am so not getting it.

I'm partial to the "Brain Damage/Eclipse" duo, but "Money" is a close second. :D

Wish You Were Here IS really long. I remember when I first looked at the tracklist and say it was only 5 songs. I felt really disappointed. Then I realized most of the songs are really damn long, especially the "Shine On, You Crazy Diamond" suite (easily my favorites- instrumentally lovely, and the lyrics are limited but carry some massive punch).

That said, one of my old fellow music nerd buddies spent an hour trying to explain the repeated chords/notes/wotev to me and I still can't hear them. I faaaaail.

The Wall.... is much more raw than the other albums. You have a real story to follow and there are some really terrible, traumatic things that happen. And there is no hope in it to speak of. The fact that the "isn't this/where we came in" thing is there scares the shit outta me. It's a cycle Pink will never break, he'll always be this broken man, and there's nothing good to be had.

ETA: Worth noting that I'm very easily affected by music. Like... I love Modest Mouse, right? But if I listen to them for more than an hour, I get moody and depressed. I can literally use happy music as an upper when I'm upset. So, listening to the Wall, which is, what, almost 90 minutes long? It really fucks with my head.

I was just about to open a can o' whoopass on you for that until I got to your P.S., and oddly enough, I was imagining doing so with a Ricky Ricardo voice, don't ask me why.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of Wish You Were Here. Don't get me wrong, DSOTM is great, but I think WYWH is better.

I just can't imagine someone NOT liking Dark Side of the Moon. It's like someone not liking Thriller. Even people that hate Michael Jackson like Thriller.

Oh, and now I have to listen to DSOTM in order to give you a proper answer to your poll.

I think Dark Side of the Moon has an overall melancholy tone to it, mainly because of the actual music but also the lyrics. Then again, I always thought Roger Waters had a really soulful and sad voice so that might be coloring my views on it. But Eclipse doesn't really end things on an up note; it's kind of neutral but I always thought Brain Damage was the true end (which is depressing) and Eclipse was just the cap to it. I really need to listen to the album again.

For me, the Wall will always be my favorite. Because I am a hopeless sheep :)

I can agree about "Eclipse" being a sort of coda for the whole thing, yeah. "Brain Damage" always makes me sad, with the little reference to Syd in it. D:

Yeah, Brain Damage is one of my favorite Floyd songs ever but it still breaks me a little every time I hear it. For me, I think Eclipse is kind of like he's becoming resigned to madness. Especially the last line about the sun being eclipsed by the moon because the moon basically = the crazy and the sun = hope. At least that's how I've always interpreted it.

And yeeeah, the Wall is super freaking. But so good! Have you ever seen the movie? That is one gigantic mindfuck if I've ever seen one.

I like Dark Side of the Moon, but it's not my favorite. I greatly prefer The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and A Saucerful of Secrets. Also Division Bell what.

But I don't concentrate on the lyrics much. They're actually one of the last things I notice. So your mom might just not have felt the song and gone in later to investigate the lyrics - happens to me, haha.
