Yeah, the book ends the same way, but it's not really happy, it's life. Her friend betrayed her, her country is destroyed, her way of life is pretty much dead forever. He loses his best friend by courting/sleeping with her.

And they don't get married or anything, he's already married (and I believe has children at that point). Basically, she's his mistress.

Yeah, he's married and she's his mistress and he takes her with him when he's working in different countries and later on she actually decides to stay in America.
