Just watched Sports Night episode 1.08, Thespis. I have had Thoughts. Anyone who's seen it... Help?

Casey: Danny... they offered me Conan's show.
Dan: They did?
Casey: Yeah.
Dan: They offered it to you?
Casey: They made- there was an offer, they offered me the show.
Dan: And you passed?

Casey: Yeah.
Dan: You passed on your own network's show.
Casey: Yeah.
Dan: To work with me in Dallas.
Casey: It was clear we were going national.
Dan: No, it wasn't.
Casey: I- I passed on the show, what does it matter why?
Dan: And if you passed on the show... Lisa must have gone thermal.
Casey: She wasn't happy.
Dan: Case. Was it the beginning of the end? You and Lisa?
Casey: Yeah.
Dan: Casey. Casey, Casey, Casey-
Casey: I appreciate your fond wishes-
Dan: What are you, stupid?
Casey: What happened to the fond wishes?
Dan: You turned down Late Night?

Casey: I wouldn't have been any good at it.
Dan: Yes, you would've!
Casey: No, I wouldn't.
Dan: You would have been great.
Casey: Danny...
Dan: You would have been great.
Casey: I would have been embarrassing.
Dan: That is... flat-out not true. What did that woman do to your confidence? How many hits did you have to take to your ego?

So, these boys are gorgeous and lovely and I want to hug Casey so bad. My question is... Casey's ex, Lisa... Wot the eff? What'd she do to him? I've rewatched this scene five times (not including the times when I was transcribing the above) and it just hurts to see. And Dan's dropped at least three major hints to Lisa being evil and horrible. Obviously Dan's biased, but... Um...

I really want to know more about Lisa. Is any more information given about her? 'Cause Sorkin is being heavy-handed in his hints about a (and this sounds strange) slightly abusive thing going down here. Not physical, because I just can't see that here, but... Lisa seemed to really shake Case up.

And, funny thing, its almost unheard of, whether in RL or in a fictional work, but if anyone wrote it? I'd want it to be Sorkin.

So, yeah, that's all I can think of now. I don't mind getting spoilers, so does anyone wanna help me out, lemme know what is up with the Casey-Lisa thing?

Also, Casey? I lurve to pieces. I really, really love him. Dan's awesome but... Casey. ♥

That right there? Why I lovelovelooooove Dan/Casey.

And.. sadly I cannot answer your question. ;P I'm pretty sure it's really canonly mostly all Danny's bias against her, though.

Heh, your icon, from that one ep when the heater broke. HEE!

I love them too. I've been looking for fic with some luck. *thumbs up*

Oh, good. 'Cause I do worry over the poor boy and... ya know, to have taken That road in Sports Night? It would have been interesting to see. Only because it's Sorkin and it's pretty much never been done before. If you're right, I'm a bit disappointed Sorkin didn't take it in that direction since it does happen in reality and is hardly ever addressed.

Oh, god, I love Danny and Casey so much. They are the eternal joy of my heart. And it's for reasons just like that.

*bliss*

The thing is, I don't know exactly what was going on or wrong in Casey's marriage. Because you never see Lisa in the canon. And it's not like Casey talks much about Lisa, and the people who do - Dana and Danny - are really biased.

(I don't think it'd be anything overtly physically abusive, though. Just - emotional undermining, that kind of thing, and if it was more than just tail-end-of-a-bad-marriage stuff, Casey would have to be blind to it. Otherwise, Casey wouldn't have left her with primary custody of Charlie.)

I've been raiding your recs, actually. *clings to you* Thank you so much. Whenever I start a new fandom, I go to you first.

I get that, that Dan's gonna be really biased as this is his life partner, but still... Casey gets this look in his eyes and I have to wonder what would have happened, had the show not been cancelled.

(Not physically, no, 'cause it'd be a bit difficult to beat up a guy like Casey. But if that was the beginning of the end and the Conan thing happened that long ago? Seriously, not good to be stuck with an angry wife for that long. I kinda wish it did go down the emotional abuse road if for no other reason than that it's never considered in life as a possibility, unlike abuse to women.)

It's not really anything specific - the woman basically walked all over him for the entire duration of their marriage. She was bitchy and demeaning, and had him under foot. That's basically the gist of it. And then there's the fact that she has custody over the boy child, and how that conflicts with Casey's inabilityt o be a proper dad anymore...

I can't wait for you to see Season 2 in all its fabulous and shining glory. !!!

If you want to read REALLY AWESOME Dan/Casey fic, I can rec you.

(Dude. 1x07, Dear Louise? The recap episode? Is basically my favourite S1 episode. MARGHARITAS, BABY.)

Oh, Casey, you big idiot. *hugs him* But now I wonder why in the name of God he'd marry such a witch. *sigh*

I hear S2 is very depressing in comparison to S2 though...

OH YES PLEASE. I've been stomping around the rec lists, and I want more. I am in love with the two boys.

(INORITE? Sealed my Jeremy-love, that one. Shock therapy!)

Well, the thing is, he, Lisa and Dana were all college pals or something, and I guess once upon a time they were actually in love.

It can be, but it's also FABULOUS. I lie not.

OK, well, go to Bright Shiny Objects (http://www.mirrordance.net/recs/sportsnight.html) and basically read everything there. Some of it's S2 spoilery, so be careful about that. The gymnastics fic is FOR THE WIN so you MUST read that one. I think I have other fic recs at my journal, but I'm not certain they're tagged. I'll let you know.

(AWESOME. SO AWESOME. !!!)

I've been here every day, Casey. Every day. And I've kept my mouth shut, because that's what you asked me to do. But if you'd have asked me, I'd have told you that Lisa is an angry, unhappy, punishing woman, and that in ten years there has never been a single moment that has suggested to me she has any affection for you at all.
Dana and Lisa were apparently friends once upon a time when they were all in college together, and Dana's not fond of her either. So it's no specific event. I know in a later episode, her nanny almost has a fit when Charlie's schedule is interfered with, which implies that Lisa is perhaps controlling and really likes things her own way.

Wow, man. With stuff like that in canon, I'm surprised I haven't found any fic that takes the Case Was Emotional Abused road.

Add this with Delga's above comment and, yeah, I'm considering my hunch at least partly right.

Oooh, Charlie. Will I ever see him in the canon?

I have nothing to comment on here other than a question:

The guy on the left (not sure if that's Dan or Casey), isnt he from Six Feet Under and The Lost Room?

Well, I've only seen two episodes and the commercials on Bravo, but from what I watch he is fantastic. On one episode of SFU he accidently takes esctacy and he is hilariously wonderful.

Actually, we never learn anything concrete about Lisa; all we know of her is hearsay, and all of it from prejudiced points of view. I've written Lisa's POV several times, as it's rare, in my experience, for all the blame to lie with one party.

Surely you do not suggest that an angel like Casey could ever do anything wrong, even in marriage? Surely not! *pets Casey's fluffy hair soothingly*
