First of the Colbert Birthday posts
May. 13th, 2007 01:04 pmText is from a speech Stephen gave a while ago. To you poor folks who've never had the fortune of taking a drama class, "say yes" is the golden rule of improv. You never say no, because it stops the story. All improv students are taught early on to reply to everything with, "yes, and...", to work with what they're given and go with it, no matter how strange or impossible it may seem.
More posts to come, maybe with fic?

Date: 2007-05-13 06:13 pm (UTC)my desktop now is the 'say "yes"' quote that someone (maybe you, i don't know) made and posted on wonkyear.
i love it because i remember my first ever show in high school we played an improv game, freeze, and they explained it and after the seniors were done (the most talented people i've ever met. i expect a few of them to end up stars) the best of the best stood up and said "and always say 'yes'. no matter that."

Date: 2007-05-13 06:22 pm (UTC)one of my old directors told us a story of one time he was in Cinderella, and the prop people forgot to leave out the iron and they did the scene and he noticed she was limping. He looks down and she was missing a shoe. It was in her hand. When she noticed the iron was missing she pulled her shoe off and no one noticed.
Another time we were doing Babes in Arms in 7th grade and there was a can of soda that they had to place down on a piano and then the female lead had to open it and take a drink. My friend was the male lead who had to put the soda down and when he placed it down he used too much force and the can exploded everywhere. It was a great moment to see them come up with a way to fix that.
I miss theatre. It was/is my life.
