The Terminal
Jul. 1st, 2004 09:55 pmTom Hanks is God of Actors.
Bow down. Thou is not worthy.
Okay. Just walked in the door after seeing The Terminal. The story of a man from some obscure third-world country journeying to NYC on a mission. As he's in the air, his obscure third-world country (hereafter known as OTWC) is overthrown and in war. As he lands, since his OTWC is no longer recognised by the US, he is detained.
Why?
A "crack in the system", as the airport director says (the airport in question is JFK, by the way). He is no longer a citizen of OTWC, yet at the same time he is not a citizen of the US. OTHW's government is in a frenzy so all of their visas are moot. So, Victor (Tom Hanks) is stuck in the airport, not allowed on American soil, not allowed to leave.
So this man, who speaks very little English at all, lives there for a good nine months. He learns the language, makes friends with the entire airport staff (eventually getting two of them together in marriage), meets Catherine Zeta-Jones' character (their relationship will impress you with not being of the norm), reveals his purpose in America, and lives the best he can.
See this film. It's fantastic. Spielburg was the Uber-Director as usual, Tom Hanks was the most convincing not-foriegn-guy-acting-like-a-foreign-guy ever, and the other characters were amazing believable and well constructed.
See this film.
