no I won't shut up about this game
Oct. 23rd, 2009 12:04 amAnd here's the best part about Brutal Legend: The overworld itself. Yes, the game is charming and funny and runs on guitar riffs and Crowning Moments of Badass. Yes, the battle system is really fun and easy to sink into in a way that makes every victory feel hard-fought and worthwhile. Yes, the music is totally awesome and I, an indie/alt rock junkie, have grown to really, really enjoy the 108 metal song soundtrack while driving around. Yes, I am mimicking Eddie's hilariously over the top and outrageous "DecapitaTIOOOOOOOON!"
The best part, though, is the world itself. I've never seen anything like this. Like, I just played Saint's Row 2, right? HUGE city to explore.
That was NOTHING like this. Legend is huge, yes, but it's alwasy a real, rich world. There are no open, blank areas to be found and no two spots look the same. I was driving around for a good ten minutes, just cruising, and I ran across the spine of Ormaggoden, a Stonehenge-esque rock formation, a 50 foot stone Celtic cross, an enormous car engine being dissolved by the sea, a cave filled with metal spiders with shiny metallic webs, statues of hands giving the "rock" sign to the sky, and a beachside rock concert.
Ten minutes. And I only wandered around the top coast of Bladehedge, which is only a fraction of the game world. Like, 1/6th. And every area is like that! From the deserts to the pleasure palace to the mines to the swamp to everything.
The amount of love and detail and effort that went into this astounds me.

ETA: ohmigawd. All of a sudden, an eclipse happened and it started raining fire. 8O Cooooool. Especially when I played a solo and summoned a flaming zepplin the crash down. Ultra cool. God, I wish I had a camera.
