Mum was going to be on her own in the receiving department at work due to the holiday (happy holiday, btw, folks), so she asked me to come along with her. I've done it several times over the years. This time, though, Mum pulled a rental copy of Bioshock for me to try out because I'd been curious about it for a while now.

That's my FPS cherry popped. (Portal lacks the S in FPS, so it doesn't count.)

I've never played a "scary" game or a real FPS game before. It was a very strange experience. I've been gaming since I was a kid, but the amount of delicate control that goes into FPS gaming surprised me. And it is genuinely terrifying to be seeing it from a first person perspective.

Bioshock does this thing where you'll being idly making your way down a hall and suddenly all the lights go out. You hear the hostile chatter of some splicers (evil mutants) and start taking a few steps back. The lights come on. The splicers spot you and charge. You start to attack- but shit! It's just your wrench, you were using it to break things! You taps the shoulder button to pull up something decent but you're out of ammo on eveything but the machine gun but you clicked past it in your rush so you tap the other shoulder button and let fly with your shock bolt attack. Congrats, you bought yourself about one second to find your damn machine gun, load it, and waste the splicers.

To summarize: I think I understand why people like FPS games. The adrenaline rush is awesome.

PS: Yahtzee was totally right about the game, except one thing: You do not trip over ammo, money, and med kits. You trip over money and med kits. I keep running out of bullets!

A good FPS can be a thing of beauty, even though it's hardly my preferred genre. My perfect FPS game is still Goldeneye for the N64, no matter how dated it gets as each year passes. The multiplayer mode will never stop being acres and acres of fun.

I read your entry like four times before I figured out you meant First Person Shooter and not Fictional Person Slash. Wiscon has officially eaten my brain.

I have Bioshock on my computer, but I have yet to play it for fear that it will eat my time, something I can't afford so close to finals. Also, for the longest time I was just terrified of FPS, because I massively fail at aiming, and the FPS camera style. I eventually got over that by mainlining the first three-quarters of Call of Duty 4.

But if Yahtzee liked Bioshock, who am I to resist?

Also, if you're at all into RPGs check out Mass Effect. It starts out slow, but then you look up and you've burned through two hours of your life and didn't even notice.

Yahtzee didn't like Bioshock. He didn't hate it though. He thought it was a Steampunk System Shock 2 and that the "moral choice system" was bullshit.

Which, really, all true. But as someone who knows Bioshock's plot, the first 3/4s of the game is brilliant and the sudden plot twist was one of the best in gaming. Don't spoil yourself for it! I still kick myself for doing so.

See, no. Yahtzee said Mass Effect was everything I dislike about RPGs. Too obsessed with text (even for a RPG) and micromanagement of weapons are huge turn-offs.

Hah! Then definitely don't play it, because there is a shit ton of dialog. I grew up with the KotORs, and have always cherished Bioware for their Great Northern Bounty. RPGs are one of the few things that Yahtzee and I differ, as he an I are in complete and utter fucking agreement on JRGPs, which make me want to vomit Skittles.

And is it just me, or have the last two reviews been really, really, really funny? Like, funnier than he's been in a while? I burst out laughing more than once, where as lately I've only giggled a bit.
