Oh, motherfuck.

Ya'll know how I'm getting a 360 for Christmas? And ya'll know that I'm a big fan of the MGS series? And ya'll know that I was ridiculously happy to not have a PS3 because it meant I didn't have to play MGS4, which is simultaneously amazing and crazy depressing?

Well, some prick on my FList (HE KNOWS WHO HE IS! :SHAKES FIST:) put the idea in my head that MGS4 was going to be ported to the 360, because that's kind of tradition with the MGS series.

And after some googling, guess what I found.

God, now I have to buy it, play it, and cry buckets because Kojima is never done torturing his characters apparently..

If you mean which sixth generation console is the best, then it's the Playstation 2, by fucking miles. I owned the system for... Oh my god, eight years now... I've played pretty much every good game on the system (except Half-Life but that's only because I can't find a copy) and I still own a handful of them. It was by far the best of that gen.

Xbox is a distant second, and Gamecubes are only good for playing Tales of Symphonia, Metroid Prime, and Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes. That's it.

I could make you a rather lengthy list of awesome PS2 games tho.

If you mean seventh/current generation... I've been comparing and contrasting a lot and I've decided on the 360, simply because of the games. The only reasons I'd get a PS3 are LittleBigWorld (which seems to be Animal Crossing on crack) and Metal Gear Solid 4 (see original post for why this is probably not an issue anymore). I know for certain I'd never want a Wii because I've realized from watching the industry in the last few months that Nintendo is shifting away from "real" gaming and is focusing on their cute gimmicks and casual gaming. I've even made a bet with Mum: in two years, we will no longer even consider the Wii a real gaming system.

The real trouble is deciding between PS3 and 360 for me. And for me, the 360 won because they have more exclusively I give a damn about. I understand that the 360's life is limited to a few years because of it's hardware limitations, but... not to get really fucking meta here, but I think the PS3 is a seventh-gen game system. Rather, it is an eighth-gen. They skipped a generation. The problem with being ahead of the times is that game developers have this monolith of amazing power on their hands but none of them know how the hell to use it. The only game I've seen truly harnessing the PS3's power is MGS4, where I often have to pause and stare because I forget I'm not watching a movie.

But anyway. In sixth gen: Go Sony. In seventh: I recommend looking into who has the most games you really want to play, then pick PS3 or 360.

Sorry that was so damn long. Uh. If you pick PS2, lemme know, I'll write up a list of recs for ya.

ETA: BTW, you can pick up a PS2 for, like, fifty bucks nowadays.

Oh, wow. Thanks for all the info. :) I guess I consider myself a casual gamer, since I tend to not have the attention span for longer games (or rather, I tend to suck at them, which doesn't do much for my self esteem and tends to kill my interest). For example, the only reason I got anywhere in Ocarina of Time was because my cousin beat it for me (ditto for Mario 64), and I never got any farther than the Great Bay Temple in Majora's Mask. :( Of course, now that I think about it, the last time I really played video games regularly was in elementary and early middle school (I learned how to swear playing Mario Kart 64 the summer before fifth grade). Then I discovered Star Trek, porn and the internet (and through that, fanfiction and slash), and video gaming kind of fell by the wayside. Mostly because of fanfiction. So maybe I'd be better now.

My thoughts on consoles so far - I don't really have much space in my room, so the Wii with all its movement seems impractical, especially since the only reason I want it besides for Melee and Brawl (which are pretty compelling reasons, considering how much being good at them could help my college social life and my wish to stick it to arrogant male gamers) is for Wii Fit, which I don't have room for anyway.

You make an interesting distinction between the different "generations" of consoles and where the PS3 fits in. The two games that have caught my eye recently (Mirror's Edge and End War) are apparently being released on both the 360 and the PS3, so that's not helping me much. Halo is the main argument for the 360 for me right now (partially genuine interest, partially again college social life and the fact that there are about three girls at our huge Halo tournaments). Maybe if I wait a while, more games will come out that will fully utilize the PS3's potential?

Heh. PS2 has Katamari Damaacy and Guitar Hero, right? :) I'm sure you can list loads of other (probably better) games, though. The only consistent issue Amazon reviewers have brought up so far is that, for some people, the PS2 seems to break very easily.

Hey, based on my current budget, I could probably maybe buy a PS2 (the slim version) on my own and ask for a 360 for Christmas? I don't know if my parents would go for it, though. I suck at time-management, and they know it. Is there any real advantage to having more storage on the XBOX, if I'm not planning on buying loads of movies/TV episodes?

BTW, Amazon.com has Half-Life (http://www.amazon.com/Half-Life-Playstation-2/dp/B00005ME8S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1226989236&sr=1-1). :)

So you're a platform gamer mainly. :makes note of that: Also, male gamers who get excited because they're good at SSB should be laughed at. Being good at those games is not a matter of skill. No fighting game is.

If you are thinking of a system as not just something to play games on, but a social tool as well, you'll want the 360. That's just it. There are much more multiplayer and team-geared games on that system, especially once you get the hang of FPSes.

So, your idea is pretty much perfect: PS2 for yourself, 360 for having fun with buddies. If you need a list of PS2 recs, lemme know. I'll write a big ol' entry about it. :D

Oh, you mean whether to get a 360 with a harddrive or not? Hm. Well, unless you are interested in some short indie games like Braid, you don't need a HD. The HD of a 360 allows you to save without memory cards, download demos and games from Xbox Live, and (this may be important) allow for reverse compatibility.

Reverse compatibility means a system will be able to play the games of it's previous incarnation. Por example, a PS2 can also play PSX games (though you have to have a PSX memory card to save). Now, current generation consoles do not come with RC standard. IIRC, the 360 requires a HD to play Xbox games while the PS3 needs the 80 GB HD and even then cannot play all old games.

Which, speaking as a gamer who likes keeping certain games forever, is bullshit. That was one of the deciding factors in my picking a 360.

I won't even talk about the Wii's RC. Just know it is even more bullshit and whoever came up with it needs to die in a fucking fire.

Any more questions? :D

Platform gamer meaning... what, games with storylines? If so, those are certainly the ones that catch my interest, but I also tend to suck at them (based on my aforementioned elementary/middle school experiences). I take that back, actually. I beat the pants off of Pokemon. Eventually. I'm not sure if that counts. *g* There is this one FPS at GameWorks that, given unlimited lives, I tend to beat in an hour or two, but that's with the awesome hand-held machine guns.

The catch to the "360 as social tool" thing is that I don't really have gamer friends. :( Maybe if I get good by myself first, though, I will. Glad you approve of my thought process. :)

Okay, I've been checking out Amazon.com about the PS2, and the two main issues seem to be "Disk Read Error"s and overheating. Also, what's your opinion on G1 vs G2 PS2s? Is the slimmer shape worth what seems to be a lot of issues with overheating and fragility?

:laughs: Okay. Platformers are third person games where you control a person you see on screen and jump around, attack, and do stuff. Zeldas are adventure-platformers. Platformers also tend to be my favorite genre. :D If I write you a rec list, there'll be a lot of that.

I've had both G1 and G2. Neither overheat unless you are really stupid and leave them in a really compact space with no airflow. I currently have a PS2 slim. It sits next to my TV and has about, oh, an inch and a half of room around it. It's never overheated, even when I played Jak 3 all damn day and clocked in about eight hours on the game.

Disk Read Error is a nightmarish thing to experience. That's what took my first PS2. I was very upset. But I had my first PS2 five years before I got DRE. You are far more likely to get the Three Rings of Death on your 360 than you are to ever get DRE on your PS2.

And about fragility, well... it's a game console. You put it down on your shelf and you leave it alone. I don't know wtf other people are doing with their to make 'em break, but I imagine it's more human error than anything.

Yeah, then I'm definitely a platform gamer. What's the other type? Tetris? *g* I like games like Brain Age too, though, as long as they don't have a ceiling (or whatever the term would be - a point at which you've solved all the puzzles and have nothing left to do. I did that with Flash Focus in about 2 hours and was kind of pissed at how easy it was.) I just need to get better at making the buttons do what I want them to. I was playing the original Smash Bros the other day for the first time and had a really hard time getting my character to do what I wanted him to and not fall off the edge. I mean, besides just Falcon-punching everybody, which works as long as they're not fast like Samus. Who, by the way, seems awesome and makes me want to play the Metroid games.

The Disk Read Error I guess happens more to some people than others. Some of the main complainers in the PS2 entries of Amazon.com have had it happen almost right away on every PS2 they've bought. :( Maybe they unknowingly emit some kind of field or something.

Maybe they have problems when they try to bring it to friend's houses or take it on trips? Wait, I just realized: if the slim PS2 is as small as they say it is, I could bring it on trips and play video games in my hotel rooms for free! That'd be awesome! That is, assuming I don't break it. :p
