Okay, um. Hal has to talk to Desire. And I'm kind of confused. Should I refer to Desire as "he" or "she" or something else entirely?

Why would you be confused about what pronoun to use for Desire?

In Gaiman's Sandmanverse, Desire is consistently referred to as both/neither male or female, and the art reflects that.

"Ze" or "Xe" is sometimes used as a gender neutral pronoun in scifi fiction. Eg:
Ze laughed
I called hir
Hir eyes gleam
That is hirs
Ze likes hirself

Wikipedia has a page on gender neutral pronouns here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender-neutral_pronoun

You could also just forsake pronouns and keep using "Desire". Then there's always singular "they".

I think in the comics Desire may have been referred to as an "it," but I don't have my tpbs on hand to reference, so I can't be sure.

I think I'd refer to the gender Desire is embodying at the time. Not a tit-for-tat "he, she, he, she" order, but maybe make it look a bit more random, possibly depending on the twists and turns of the conversation.
