Ended up watching the Utena movie with Mum because she had a crappy day that included dentist needles and I wasn't going to tell her no.

So, my only thought on the movie is this.

WHAT THE FLYING FUCK WAS THAT SUPPOSED TO BE?

I've never been more confused in my entire life. Just. What.

They're metaphors. They're big shiny speedy METAPHORS.

Also, nipple-less boobs. Did you notice those? Those always freak me the fuck out.

I fancy I understood all of the series, even when it went bonkers in the final arc. But this? I have no idea WTF. I am so very very confused.

THAT AMUSES ME SO MUCH. It's in half the anime I've ever seen. Oh,it's okay to show nekkid women on the screen, BUT IF THEY HAVE NIPPLES, THAT'S NOT ON. Too risque~! :lols forever:

You can't say the dance scene wasn't just fricking gorgeous, tho!!

The first time I watched that movie it was without subtitles, which raised the incomprehensible level by an order of magnitude. Still. Pretty. <3

I figure the WTF factor is more or less the natural extension of the Kashira Kashira Gozonji Kashira shadowpuppets, etc. They just did everything 10x bigger than before. "What, showing Anthy stabbed with a million swords and in a coffin isn't symbolic enough? FINE, WE'LL CRUSH HER IN A GIRL!CAR!"

I bet they were laughing their asses off in that studio. :-)

Visual metaphor of how, though it's Utena helping Anthy escape the Academy, it's Anthy the one driving to her destiny. The ball is in her court, so to say; and it subverts the usual fairytale endings in which the princess is rescued by someone else.

But why were they leaving. It barely established anything about the horrors of the Rose Bride. Was this movie just for the fans of the series who had the backstory?

Was this movie just for the fans of the series who had the backstory? <-- I'm afraid that yeah, indeed. It's so effin' full of symbols upon symbols it says very little about the characters, or an actual plot. One does need to watch the series to understand it >:

Yeah. It's a reimagining of the series and all, but they meant it for people who already knew the canon. Some of my friends made the mistake of watching the movie first and it turned them off Utena for a long damn time.

Just remember that it has NOTHING to do with the original canon/storyline, despite all the similarities. It's a seperate universe.

But I gotta be honest. If I hadn't been aware of the series and seen it first before watching the movie, I'd probably never have watched/read the series proper.

Metaphors and whatnot are great, but christ, this movie has it in spades. I'm not sure, in this instance, if it's a good or bad thing.

I tried to warn you (http://lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com/442103.html?thread=2778871#t2778871), but you didn't believe me. WHY DIDN'T YOU BELIEVE ME?

LOLOLOLOLOL

I'm seriously here in a gigglefit at work over your reaction to this movie, considering it's pretty much the exact same reaction that I had to it.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena the Movie is like the Highlander 2 of anime. People just pretend it never happened.

People just pretend it never happened.

What? WHY? Yeah, totally incomprehensible, but also amazing and pretty.

Oh, Utena movie. I remember that my version had commentary from the director where he explained everything, but even then, it didn't make much sense. The whole thing just smacks of the crew trying waaaay too hard to be deep and artsy and failing. It is pretty, so it gets points for that. When I was in high school, I used to like showing it to anime fans and watch them flail from the wtf.
I know that most fans of the series (myself included) just pretend that the movie didn't exist.

Oh, and don't watch Lain or Haibane Renmei. It makes even less sense than this does.
