luciazephyr: Book of the Still, the time traveler's lifeline (Default)

1. So Fly wants me to expand my Otacon/Tenth Doctor snippet into a full fic. My initial idea (because I am unoriginal and turn to Adams for all my ideas on outer space) was to have them go to the Starship Titanic before its Spontaneous Critical Existence Failure, making the fic MGS/DW/H2G2. Apparently, the actual DW show did this right before the Martha arc? Can anyone tell me a little about that episode? Was it based on Douglas Adams' work (ie: all the robots with wacky AI, Leovinus the creator, the parrot, the talking bomb, etc?) because if it wasn't, I think I'll write it anyway because I love the concept and the PC game and the Terry Brooks book that went with it.

2. So while cleaning out the living room, I totally reorganized out video and gaming shelves. In the process, I took out all the old VHS tapes we have because Mum and I have not owned a VHS player in +5 years and haven't owned a working one in longer.

I have NO IDEA what to do with these tapes. I was wondering if anyone wanted some. No strings attached, I just feel bad throwing them out. I'd be willing to pay shipping even as long as it's not super expensive (and I very much doubt it would be). Here's what I have:

  • Star Wars Trilogy (the original, not the shit one. also, I believe these tapes came before Lucas fucked with the editing on the original, so Han Shoots First in these IIRC)

  • The Mummy/The Mummy Returns

  • Jurassic Park 1 through 3

  • Lake Placid (do NOT give me crap about owning this, I fukken love this movie. it's stupid but it has Bill Pullman and fukken OLIVER PLATT okay its hilarious and I wish I owned a DVD of it, not kidding)

  • Interview with a Vampire (never opened)

  • Independence Day (okay actually I cannot find the tape, but the case. hm....)

  • Miss Congeniality

  • Legends of the Fall (also in original packaging, never opened)

  • Galaxy Quest (if you have not seen this movie and own a VCR, tell me, I will send it to you. you must see this film. funniest shit ever.)

  • Apollo 13

  • Hope Floats

  • The Matrix

  • Pulp Fiction

  • Silent Movie (that Mel Brooks flick in which the only spoken line was given to that one mime dude)

Yeah, I grew up on trashy action adventures (all the romantic stuff is Mum's). No surprise there. Also I have no way to rewind these so, um, yeah. Just saying. I doubt anyone wants 'em, but just in case, yanno. Does anyone know what I could do with these things anyway?

-Lucy

PS: holy shit I gashed open my thumb and I'm bleeding everywhere when did that happen.... and why do we not have any band-aids in the house.

I have hundreds of tapes that were a lot of work and money and I know your feeling. If nobody else close to you wants them, I'd like to watch the original SW (um never actually having seen the films apart from lots of excerpts). Own Galaxy and Mummy on VHS as well.

I own the ST game still and I used to have the book before I sold it back to the store. I loved both.

The game has a place of honor on my shelf, but I didn't even know there was a book until a couple of years ago! I found the last copy in a nearby bookstore.
So, needless to say, if DW did a proper ST-based episode I am all over that.

So the DW episode wasn't based on the book or game?

I'm sorry to say I don't know - I lost track of DW after the first season and am now woefully behind. Could probably find an episode summary on Wikipedia, and if not I'm sure there's a DW-specific wikia out there.

Hmm, here's the Wikipedia summary of the Starship Titanic episode:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyage_of_the_Damned_%28Doctor_Who%29

From skimming through it, it sounds like you've got a lot of room to work to do your own adaptation.

~Oh gosh, I still need to get rid of VHS tapes too...~

I still have some VHS too. The majority of them are cartoons that I was interested in as a child (Rugrats, DBZ, Kim Possible...) but two are actually movies, Antz and Galaxy Quest.
