So um.

Anyone else seriously interested in going into the gaming industry as a career and know anything about what courses to take in college? Mum and I are both looking at the Uni of Phoenix's online program for some education.

ETA: Research says knowing C++ is tres important. Also knowing someone in the industry helps a lot. Also also, taking a course in game design is nice, but having a major in history/philosophy/etc with electives in tech writing, programming, gen design, and the like also works well.

And I need to get a PC capable of playing games because mods are excellent for resumes.

I think it would depend on what aspect of the business you're interested in. Graphic design and programming seem like a good place to start, though.

I would love to work in design, starting low but working my way up to a core feature designer (level design, character, etc). I don't think I can do the more, erm, artistic side of it as I have zero art ability. I'm just above stick figures.

Even so, a couple art courses would probably help with the computer design aspect. Looking into architecture/city planning would also lend insight into how areas are actually set out instead of ending up with a Raccoon City-eqsue layout. I'm not sure how much of this is left up to concept artists.

My stepdaughter wants to work in the industry - she wants to create the tools the designers use to program. So she's been admitted to ASU's School of Engineering in Computer Science. She has zero artistic talent as well. :P

If you wanted, I could put you in touch with my friend who works for EA. I had the daughter chat with her, and she ended up putting her in touch with other women in the gaming industry.

Honestly, I haven't even done my FAFSA for this yet, so I don't think I'm at that step yet, but if it were okay, I might ask you for such a connection later? I'd be thrilled to hear from someone who knows what it's like on the inside. Especially since EA is no longer That Evil Vidya Game Company- THANKS ACTIVISION FOR TAKING THE CROWN!.

My problem right now is if I do anything this year (or probably next), it has to be local or online. I'm just not clear on what I should taking. I guess programming... but otherwise I'm clueless. D8

As someone else stated, it depends on what part of the industry you're interested in. There are all kinds of opportunities for art people, but you also need people working in sounds design, translation, scripting/story boarding, legal, PR, etc. Of course, you also need your code monkeys that figure out how to make all that fun stuff work in game as well. If you wanna work in code, you should probably start learning C, Java, and C++. I don't really know much about coding stuff, but I know that they like you to pick a hardware or software side to specialize in after a while.

I have no art ability, so I'd be shooting for something else. I do like localization/translation, I must admit. I wonder if there's a market for English to French? Hm.

I DLed a C++ compiler. I don't understand how any of it works, so at the least I have to google for tutorials.
