QUESTION TIME: You are writing a fic with a character who is a musician. If you want him to sing a song in the story, do you go for the obscure or for something most readers would know?

You have him sing something that suits his personality. Is he someone who'd only sing obscure songs? Would he do a cool-sounding cover of a mainstream song? Does he write his own?

But songs in fic can lead to pretty extreme narm if you do them to show off his tender and sensitive soul, because the fact is that music doesn't work when it's written down. It's impossible to replicate the feeling of music in a piece of writing. As long as you're not saying 'SEE, BEAUTIFUL MUSIC, THIS IS WHY HE'S A GOOD GUY' you'll probably be okay.

You think I would ever go for the narmy route? D8 Nah, I'll execute it just like it happens once in a while in his books. It's always a brief moment, but a sweet one for the character. And because I am a big ol' lame, I think maybe I'll have to write some for him. Which... is less disastrous than it could be. Or so I hope.

I have a bad, bad habit of writing a song for it myself. Sometimes it works. YMMV.
