luciazephyr: Dress in Drag and Marry the Doctor! ([DW] Book of the Still. Really happened.)
[personal profile] luciazephyr
1. So I just spent a full week reteaching myself computer information systems and web scripting after the drama of the move wrecked my college, right? And I succeeded (my teacher says he anticipates a huge recovery in my grade from all my catch-up work) for all intents and purposes.

Basically, Saturday was the first day in three solid weeks that I had to myself. No obligations, no moving, nothing to worry about for 24 hours.

So obviously my period decides to arrive that morning and incapacitate me for the duration.

My luck, guys. My fucking luck.

2. I HAVE DISCOVERED JOHN GREEN'S CRASH COURSE: WORLD HISTORY SERIES. oh my gooooood this shit is fascinating as fuck and hilarious and Green's enthusiasm for history makes it VERY easy to learn. I DIDN'T KNOW THAT ABOUT SNAILS! TELL ME MORE, JOHN GREEN! /chinhands

3. I realized yesterday that I haven't visited LJ to do anything but reply to comments in months. So it's gone from my bookmark bar. Do folks still use LJ? Whyyyyy. Come to DW, it's better in pretty much every way.

4. I am excited for Elementary and the next person to claim they are ripping off BBC Sherlock will be fed to a lion. This summarizes my feelings on the matter well:

A tweet by user peasantings saying "I'm really glad Sir Arthur Conan Doyle came back from the grave, and told Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat 'worry about my brand.'"

Moffat, shut your mouth and go ruin some more female characters or whatever it is you do in your free time.

5. So. Fic. I'm settled in Florida and despite the fact I fucking hate being here and everything about this fucking state (ask my about my grandmother's racism sometime), I am slowly getting back into the swing of writing again. I have a shortish one-shot Dresden fic that is half Binz's fault and half thisfishflies's fault about Harry wearing nail polish.

(Actually it's mostly Binz's fault because if you get her talking about Harry's idealization of femininity, she will give you Ideas about Harry embracing parts of himself he feels he's not allowed to and you will get Feels and it will suck, but seriously, if Binz wants to talk at you about this, let her, it's fascinating and full of feels.)

(Also, the fic is called Hand Jobs, WHICH I WANT TO ESTABLISH WAS BINZ'S IDEA. NOT MINE.)

So that'll eventually get posted. Then it's time for some fucking Matter of Chicago renewal, aaaaw yeeeeah.

6. 100% unrelated to Dresden, I have been slowly writing a Dragon Age: Origins fic that's pretty much me dealing with the game's lack of dealing with issues of anti-elf racism and the fact the City Elf origin revolves around rape and sexual assault. It's not grimdark, but it's pretty serious. Totally unbeta'ed though. For the curious: oh, bring me a love that can sweeten a sword.

7. I don't believe in uppercased letters in titles okay? okay.

8. So on Tumblr for some inexplicable reason there has been a random renaissance of The 10th Kingdom, a miniseries you probably never heard of but it was amazing, okay? It was a post-modern twist on fairy tales and had some really stellar writing and some of the most interesting characters ever. And this 10K renaissance reminded me of my love for the protagonist, Virginia Lewis, and that in turn made me think about the Characters I Have Loved. I came up with four, and I'm going to briefly share them with you under the cut.

Just need to figure out who's on it.

A photomanip I made ages ago depicting Fitz Kreiner-- played here by Callum Blue-- standing in the TARDIS

1. Fitzgerald Michael Kreiner (Doctor Who), the greatest companion you've never heard of. Bisexual leather-loving guitar-playing clone-of-a-clone-of-a-clone who's own personal timeline is so fucked it can only be described as It's Complicated. The proto-Rory, but a million times better than anything Moffat could dream of doing. A man who, given every shitty, horrific, depressing thing that's ever happened to him, should be the most angry sullen person in the universe (the Doctor included), but.... isn't. Who still loves and just tries to make the world(s) a better place. (Icon on the DW-side of this entry is something Fitz has actually done. His life is amazing.)

ETA: Why Fitz Kreiner is the Greatest DW Companion You've Never Heard Of.

Utena Tenjou, principle character of RGU anime. She has big blue eyes, a very point face, and short pink hair under a cute vaguely military cap.

2. Utena Tenjou (Revolutionary Girl Utena), the one who "leaves me feeling as though someone peered into my dreams and heart and created something that, not to sound ridiculous I hope, resonates with me on a level so deep that it actually kind of scares me." The girl who wanted to be a prince. The girl who was a prince.

Virginia Lewis, a short-haired brunette woman.

3. Virginia Lewis (The 10th Kingdom), the one that is my patronus. Like, god. Virginia. I get you. You get me. We're it-getters. I love her strength and her vulnerability and how the latter is never more than the former. Discussed more here.

Fanart of Garrus Vakarian, a turian which looks like a bipedal raptor-bird being, and Commander Shepard, who in this instance is a bald black woman with a wry smirk.
Amazing art by reality-ajar

4. Garrus Vakarian (esp. with my Adelaide Shepard, yep) (Mass Effect), the one who I could write sonnets for. Garrus, the brash cowboy cop. Archangel, the tired vigilante two steps away from giving into his own furious anger. Garrus. Fucking. Vakarian, the right hand to Shepard and thus the second best hope for the universe. Best written romance of all time. OF ALL TIME. YEAH, I SAID IT.

10. Hey, anyone have any advice on getting cheap airplane flights? Or maybe have some coupon codes lying around? Just wondering.

That Elementary tweet was awesome. I kind of want get it engraved and send it to Moffat. (Oh, Moffat, cry harder, it just makes your tears that much more delicious.) Seriously, I am so done with him and that whole segment of fandom that I want to buy up every episode of Elementary twice out of sheer spite.

Someday I will watch all these excellent things. The 10th Kingdom mystifies me in a good way, and though I can't play games worth a damn I love watching people play things with great stories.

If you can, fly on a Wednesday. The cheap tickets are midweek. Also, indirect flights with a stopover or two can be cheaper, you just have to be willing to put up with the hassle of changing planes a couple times (which, sometimes, just isn't worth it).

That is actually the greatest news ever and I am never ever even thinking of taking that twerp seriously again. 'The Once Grand Moff', indeed. XD

The 10th Kingdom is DEFINITELY going on my Stuff I Need To Watch list, which is very long at this point but I'm planning on working through some of it this summer. It sounds excellent and fascinating and like it has actual DEPTH, which is something I've been craving a while. (The only TV I've watched lately has been Grandma's procedurals. Let me tell you how much those'll drop your faith in humanity after an episode or three.)

Hi! I commented on your previous post but LJ ate it. Here's what I said:

Congrats! I'm glad that your finals are over. I hope that your summer goes well.

Also I found a fanmix community: http://waywardmixes.livejournal.com You might like the fanmixes there. One of my favorites is the Abhorsen one.

Also I love the Tenth Kingdom miniseries too. I went looking for the novelization about a month ago but it's out of print. Also I found a quick summary of the sequel. I wish that the sequel would be made especially since it's about Wolf and girls in red hoods.

Simon Moore discussed the plot of the sequel in the September 2006 issue of the 10th Kingdom Official Fan Newsletter.

Here's what it's going to be about:

Sorry that the sequel disappointed you. The sequel is in development hell so I doubt it'll be made. I think it'll be interesting for me because it focuses on Wolf who is pretty mysterious for a lot of reasons. It seems that the 10th Kingdom focuses on Virginia, the prince and their families which was great but I would have liked to know more about Wolf.

Wow! I watched 10th Kingdon when it was first-run, and I really, really liked it, up until the episode with the lamb-songs, I think? I mean I still liked it after that, but the denouement disappointed me for reasons I don't remember right now. I would not mind watching the sequel at all! They took up the fairy-tale thing and ran with it and a really good direction.

UTENA. Man, the end of the TV series is PROFOUND. I walked around in a daze for a awhile after, trying to talk about agency before I had the vocabulary. I never did figure out why Anthy was damned in the first place, though. She was just trying to protect her brother, man.

CRASH COURSE! I am also watching this! I sort of can't wait to watch the Mongols epi. He mentions how they are the universal exception so many times that I want to know more now.

(PERIODS. AUGH. I'm like to take a hop in the magic hot springs and be able to turn into a boy for a week in every four.)

Lord, Utena. I loooooved that show. Still don't understand some of the more intense scenes at the ending, for rather more reasons than it being kind of meta and trippy. I'd binged on it on YouTube, and by two in the morning I'd successfully procured English subs or dubs of all the episodes... except the last three, which were only available in Japanese or Spanish. I picked Spanish, having taken it for a few years, but watching Utena in a language you barely speak is something of an experience. It was still awesome, just there were a lot of concepts I didn't have the words to process. I have got to watch it again.

I've seen the movie and I quite liked it, but yeah, it's pretty out there. In a beautiful way--I love Ohtori's weirder moments, and that scene towards the beginning with the wide wash of roses had a huge impression on me--but it's definitely... strange. I am epically understating, but there comes a point where superlatives are inadequate.

It's totally worth hitting up a friend of a friend who has the series and binge-watching it over a weekend. It's a little Atlas Shrugged - just in that it has more impact during your teenage years than at any other time - but it's such an amazing series to watch unfold itself at the end. It presents mysteries, and then actually follows through on them. I mean, you might not understand it, but the structure was pulled off nicely.

LOL, that owl gif is Amaaaaaazing! *Hehehehe*

Yeah, sorry, I guess I should have re-phrased that! I meant more like, when you're a teenager and nothing makes sense, this has a real IMPACT that it might not when you're a little more sure of yourself.

*Going to watch Mongols!*

:I think I'd like to try it? I learned my in-public manners from my father, and I'm aware that they thought I was a male right up until I was born, so I've always sort of wondered. I'm comfortable as a girl, and I wouldn't want to switch to being a guy permanently, but for a week? I'd give it a go.

So 10th Kingdom is something I need to hunt down!

I freaked out when I saw the first pic though, Callum Blue on Doctor Who?! But Fitz is a character from the novels? I have no idea, tell me more please.

That's why he looked familiar! I have this thing where I can't recognize certain actors unless in the context of a particular show, and outside of Dead Like Me I just cannot ever nail Callum Blue. So he was Fitz? From, like, that semi-canonical eighth season, right? Or where? Who confuses me sometimes, but this character sounds amazing and I want to meet him properly.

Oh, Garrus. <3

I'm playing ME3 now, so I'm sure there is more wonderful Garrus-ness I haven't seen yet, but I've known and loved him for two games, and you are absolutely right that he is AWESOME. And that shipping him with Shepard is only right and good. (I refused both romance options in ME1 because my Shepard was much more attracted to Garrus than either of them - I was delighted when ME2 allowed me to make canon the courtship I was already imagining in my head.)

Awesome fanart, btw. :D
